Both written and illustrated by Kouta Hirano, Drifters is an action-packed anime series that was first published on April 30, 2009. Years later it became a television show premiering on October 7, 2016. Despite a number of OVA special episodes being released after the conclusion of season one, there has been a number of calls for the creation of a season two.

When Can We Expect Season Two to Premiere?

After the finale of season one on December 23, 2016, a message was released promoting the premiere of season two. The message simply stated, “To be continued Second Season. See you again. Tokyo 20XX. Sayonara.”

Since that time, no word has been spoken or written concerning the release of season two of Drifters. This does not necessarily mean it will not happen though. It is important to note that Japanese anime series are released differently from shows in the United States, with sometimes years happening in between each season.

While the statement “20XX” could mean any year, realistically it is the belief of many that season two will premiere in the year 2020. Until then however, episodes of season one of Drifters that are dubbed in English are available for viewing on Funimation.

In addition, Dark Horse Comics has announced plans to continue the writing of the manga series. This bit of news gives hope to the idea that more seasons of the television show are to follow!

What Is The Plot Line of Drifters?

The show follows the story of real-life war hero Shimazu Toyohisa, loosely following the events of the Battle of Sekigahara, which occurred on October 21, 1600.

Despite critically wounding Li Naomasa during the battle, Shimazu becomes injured himself during his efforts to serve as rearguard for his troops while they retreat. As he tries to escape, he is suddenly placed in a corridor from modern times that is full of hundreds of doors. A man called Murasaki is also in the corridor, and ushers Shimazu through the first door.

Upon waking, Shimazu discovers he is in a new world that is full of mythical beasts as well as people. More interestingly, warriors from his time that had been presumed dead are also there. He quickly becomes friends with the warlord Nobunaga Oda and legendary archer Yoichi Suketaka Nasu. These two are able to help Shimazu become adjusted to his new life. They also share with him the knowledge that there is great political unrest where they are and that they have all been sent to this place as “Drifters” that must keep the peace.

However, another group known as the “Ends” are also in this world and are determined to overtake the world and control it for themselves. They believe that in order for this to happen, the “Drifters” must die. In order to accomplish this, they unleash creatures such as giants and dragons.

The show itself follows the war that ensues between the two groups.

The Drifters does such a good job developing its characters and their crazy antics that it makes it difficult for the viewer to know exactly which side they should be rooting for. While the Ends are supporting suppressed races, the Drifters are coming to the aid of Dwarves and Elves, although mainly for their own selfish needs.

The war is only beginning at the end of season one leaving viewers with more questions than answers as to what the motives of each character is.
