If a disease scares you, there was a time, when the Medieval, Egyptians, Chinese, Indians and others used ridiculous remedies and cures which was million times scarier than the disease per say. The treatments were wacko, ludicrous and even grotesque. They had all kinds of treatments that could make you go weak in your knee from using obnoxious smelling farts to using animal potty and ridiculous concoctions. If the patient did not make it after this treatment, we are not sure if he actually succumbed to the disease or the treatment itself. Here are a few remedies and cures that were practiced that will leave you baffled.

1. Farts
Farts were used to cure ‘Death Plaque’. The principle behind the cure was ‘Like Cures Like’. They knew Death Plaque was caused by pungent odors. So, they treated it using obnoxious farts that were stored in bottles. Just one question. How did they manage to get a fart into a bottle?!

2. Moldy Bread
Used by the Egyptians to disinfect cuts. They are believed to inhibit the growth of disease causing bacteria. Hmm, Interesting! So, if we technically ate mold infused bread, would it disinfect wounds inside our body?

3. Crocodile Dung
Are you too much of a caveman to use a condom? Then try crocodile dung. Apparently, Egyptians used it as a contraceptive where the crocodile dung was placed in the vagina which would serve has an impenetrable barrier.

4. Arsenic
Yes, Arsenic. I know Arsenic is poisonous and all that. But to your pleasant surprise it was used by the Chinese to cure malaria and syphilis.

5. Paraffin Wax
What would you do today to get that perfect blemish-free, smooth as butter, wrinkle free skin?
Get a Botox. Duh! Know what they did back in the 19th century? They used paraffin wax to smoothen out those wrinkles. They also injected it into breasts.

6. Burned Candles
If you thought a dentist is the scariest person now, meet the dentists of medieval period. They burned candles in the patient’s mouth to burn invisible germs stuck to their teeth.

7. Brain of Tortoise
The Egyptians even had a cure for cataract. It was a potion of tortoise’s brain and honey. This was placed on the eye, followed by a prayer.

8. Hot Iron
In the middle ages, if you were diagnosed with Hemorrhoids, they would shove a red hot iron up your anus and voila you were cured.

9. Mixture of pig’s brains, mummified corpse and earthworms
This disgusting mixture was known to be used in the 17th century to fight wounds. Well, sounds disturbing. However, the remedy worked.

10. Snail Juice
Slime of the snail was used to cure cold, cough & ear aches in the 1700s.

11. Tongue Cutting
There was a bizarre treatment followed in the 18th and 19th century where they cut off a chunk of the tongue to cure stuttering.

Was used to treat sore throats. We cannot exactly trace as to when this was used.

13. Cigarettes
We all know cigarettes cause cancer. But do you also know they were used in the 20th century to cure cancer. What a strange oxymoron!

Mercury was believed to treat syphilis until the early 20thcentury. However, this came with a lot of side effects and also could lead to death.

15. Electricity
Jolt of electricity was believed to cure impotency, way back in the 1800s. Seems strange to you? A group of Israeli scientists still believe this is true. The science behind it is the electric shock waves induce the growth of blood vessels.
